Mere Sands Wood is a small nature reserve set around several lakes, which is operated by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The area was originally planted with woodland during the mid 19th century, however there were large amounts of sand deposits which were extracted for industry during the 1970’s and 80’s. After the sand extraction was complete, the site reverted to a wildlife reserve, with several small lakes and areas of woodland, heath and wet meadows. A path circles the two lakes with several well built hides from which to observe the wildfowl. Long lenses are generally required, as the birds have a habit of keeping to the opposite side of the lake – regardless of which hide you use! There is also a well stocked bird feeding station where numerous woodland birds can be spotted, as well as grey squirrels. The site has a Visitor Centre, and car park, entrance to the site is free, but there is a £2 parking fee, which is a very reasonable price for access to the reserve.

Mere Sands Wood lies close to the A59 between Ormskirk and Tarleton. At the village of Rufford, turn onto the B5246 (Holmeswood Road) and about 1 mile down this road, turn right into a track leading to the parking area.
