Richmond Falls are a series of waterfalls on the River Swale, close to the centre of the town of Richmond, which lies just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  They are located in an attractive limestone gorge and are a bit like a smaller version of the more famous Aysgarth Falls on the River Ure.

Richmond is an attractive market town complete with castle which is situated on the River Swale, just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  To visit Richmond Falls, there is a small Pay And Display car park next to the waterfalls, but they can easily be included in any visit to Richmond by walking downhill on Millgate past Richmond Castle until the River Swale is reached.

The falls are located in a limestone gorge which looks particularly attractive in the autumn when the trees change colour.  All the images below were taken in  early November. The volume and width of the falls is very dependent on rainfall, so once again a visit in Autumn is more likely to show a higher volume of flow than in the summer.  The image below was taken with a 6 second exposure, providing plenty of flow to the water.

Moving in closer to the waterfalls means the flow of water appears greater, so a much sorter exposure of 1/3 to 1/15 sec can be used.

In the image below, I have thrown a few leaves onto the rocks to provide some foreground interest.

Unfortunately the falls have gained a reputation as a party location, so are probably best avoided at Bank Holidays or warm weekends in the summer.
