Old Gang Smelt Mill

The Old Gang Smelt Mill is a disused lead mine and smelting mill in the Yorkshire Dales, located on the moors between Swaledale and Arkengarthdale on the Old Gang Beck. The mill was probably in use during the mid 19th century, though detailed records are missing. It probably fell out of production by the 1880s when cheaper lead could be imported and the buildings were then left to fall into ruin, but fortunately for photographers, the main chimney remains standing. The mill is located in a narrow river ravine high on the moors and it makes an interesting site to visit, with several composition opportunities.

The B6270 runs along Swaledale. The village of Healugh lies just over 1 mile west of the main village of Reeth. Immediately after Healaugh a minor road turns off on the right and climbs to the open moors above. After 2 miles, the road reaches a junction with another road coming up from Swaledale, and here there is parking space for about 10 cars.  From the car park, cross the river, then take the track on the left. The track leads to the Old Gang Mill in about 20 minutes.

Once the mill buildings come onto sight, there are numerous composition opportunities, using various rocks in the foreground. We visited on a bitter winter’s day when there was there was a bit of snow on the ground, adding to the interest. Alternatively an overcast day with good cloud texture would add to the gloomy industrial feel.

Inside the buildings, you may find some puddles, which can be used to produce some nice reflections.

It is worth going beyond the mill for views that include the Old Gang Beck. A winter day with snow on the ground gives some idea of how bleak the location would have been for the workers. Also beyond the mill there is a packhorse bridge over the beck which is also worth exploring.

As an industrial scene, it is always worth trying out a mono version, to add to the gloomy drama.

Surrender Smelt Mill

Returning to the car park, there is a second smelt mill in sight across the rover. This is Surrender Smelt Mill, which is worth a quick visit, however the ruins are not as extensive as the Old Gang mill, and it lacks the iconic chimney stack.
