Swanage is a small seaside resort at the eastern end of the Dorset Jurassic Coast. For photographers, the main interest are the piers – both new and old. The new pier was constructed in 1895 and was originally used as a working pier for pleasure steamers rather than an entertainment venue. There is a small charge to stroll along the pier. The old pier has long since fallen to ruin, but its remains can still be seen jutting out of the sea. There is also an interesting mural painted onto the Pier Head building. This was built as a mess hall for troops during the Second World War, but is now derelict despite several development proposals. The mural shows what will happen if it falls into a further state of decay.
