Bovington Tank Museum

The Bovington Tank Museum hosts the largest collection of tanks and armoured vehicles in the world.  The site has long been associated with tanks, being the home of the ‘Heavy Branch Machine Gun Corps’ in 1916 – the fist tank unit in the world.  After the First World War, some of WW1 tanks were collected at Bovington to be broken up for scrap, but some were preserved, marking the beginning of the museum.  Today, it hosts tanks from numerous countries and era, and tells the story of the development of the tank from their origins to deal with the specific problems of WW1 trench warfare, up to today’s multi million pound vehicles.  The museum makes a good location for a wet day in Dorset, and it is easy to spend a full day on a visit.
