Stickle Tarn nestles in a hollow above Great Langdale at the foot of the impressive cliff of Pavey Ark. It is reached by a short steep walk from the Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, which climbs Stickle Ghyll (also know as Mill Ghyll). The tarn and the surrounding cliffs are unseen until the last few feet of the climb, and as they suddenly burst into view it is one of the most impressive scenes in the Lake District.

From Ambleside at the head of Windermere, take the A593 towards Clappersgate, continuing on this road until Skelwith Bridge is reached. At Skelwith Bridge, turn right towards Great Langdale, and continue on this road as it by-passes Elterwater and passes through the village of Chapel Stile. Beyond Chapel Stile, the road narrows, but there is ample parking at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, where there is a National Trust car park.
The path up Stckle Ghyll starts immediately from the car park, climbing steeply, with some easy scrambling over rocks. After just under a mile and 1200ft of climbing, the outlet from Stickle Tarn is reached and the surrounding mountains burst into view.
