Blackrock Cottage is one of the most iconic and most photographed cottages in Scotland. It is very easy to access, being situated right beside the main A82 road across Rannoch Moor, and with the Buachaille Etive Mor as a backdrop it is no surprise it is such a popular subject. The cottage is just over 1 mile from the Kingshouse Hotel, which offers different views of the surrounding mountains.

The A82 is the only road linking Crianlarach with Glencoe across Rannoch Moor. When the Buachaille Etive Mor comes into sight, it heralds the approach of Glencoe, however to reach Blackrock Cottage, turn off left at the Glencoe ski are. Blackrock Cottage is just under 0.5 miles down this road.

There is really just one viewpoint at Blackrock Cottage, particularly as it is private property, so access to the cottage is restricted. The classic view is with the cottage backed by the Buachaille Etive Mor.

Although the composition opportunities are restricted, it is worth re-visiting the cottage for different weather conditions. The location suits a darker, moodier feel.

If the large rock in the foreground is included in the composition, it can be placed either to the left or right of the cottage. Positioning it on the left, loses the view of the Buachaille, but it does make for a slightly different composition.
