Scaleber Force

Scaleber Force is a lovely waterfall located on High Hill Lane – the minor road between Settle and Malham.  The road climbs over moorland, which appears to have little to offer scenically, but where it crosses the Scaleber stream there is a wooded glen, which makes a beautiful setting for the waterfall.

From the west, turn off the A65 at Settle and take the B6480 which runs through the town. In the centre of the town, opposite the Settle Social Club, turn onto Chapel Street, which turns into Victoria Street then Albert Hill as it climbs out of Settle. Turn left onto High Hill Lane, signposted to Kirkby Malham, and Scaleber Force is just over 1 mile further on, where the road crosses above a wooded glen.  There is space to park a few trees, and the waterfall is accessed by a path that climbs down into the glen.    The approach from Settle is probably also the best route if travelling from the East along the A65. Although it adds a few extra miles, it avoids a lot of narrow country lanes on the approach from the east.

The main path down into the glen reaches the bottom of the falls, but from this location the upper falls are out of sight and it is difficult to get a good composition.  It is better to take a small path that branches off left on the descent, which takes you to the bottom of the main upper falls, which gives a more impressive view. The falls are especially attractive in the autumn.
