The Falls Of Rha

The Falls of Rha are a fairly well kept secret, tucked away in the village of Uig in the Trotternish peninsula on the Isle of Skye.  With so many other attractions on Skye, the falls tend to be overlooked, but are well worth a detour. The falls are located in a wooded glen just a few metres from the main road through Uig, and drop about 80ft in two steps into a deep pool. This location is popular with swimmers  – when we visited, we had to wait for swimmers to vacate the pool before being able to photograph the falls.

The village of Uig is located on the western side of the Trotternish peninsula and is well served by the A87 due to the ferry terminal to the Isle of Harris. As the A87 rounds the head of Uig Bay, a single track road to Staffin (the A855) branches off on the right, and there is ample parking at this junction. Walk up the Staffin road for a 150m and pass through a gate on the right into the woods. A good path goes through the woods to reach the waterfalls after just a couple of minutes walk.

The Falls Of Rha

The waterfall drops about 85ft in two stages over a limestone escarpment. There are not too many composition opportunities, but the double falls are attractively arranged and surrounded by trees, so this would be an excellent location for autumn colours.
