Iceland Day 2 – Hraunfossar to Grundarfjordur

In the morning we re-visited Hraunfossar Waterfalls for an extended photography stop, then set off for the Snaefelsnes Peninsula.  The weather was cold, but bright and sunny, so we stopped a few times along the way to photograph the ice covered River Thvera and some of the surrounding mountains.  Our first planned stop was Gerduberg Cliffs, at over 1km long these are the longest basalt cliffs in Iceland.  We chose not to climb up to the cliffs, but instead drove onto Sheep’s Waterfall.  This is a scenic waterfall that is immediately below Route 54, but it is not signposted and is completely unseen and unsuspected from the road.  There is however a picnic site above the falls, so they are easy to locate.  From the waterfall, there is also an open view across lake Selvallavatn towards  the Snaefelsnes mountains.  After visiting the waterfall we crossed to the north side of the Snaefelsnes peninsula where we stopped for a few shots across the fjords to some of the mountains.  By the time we arrived at our hotel (The Kirkjufell Guest House) just outside Grundarfjordur, the weather had closed in, so there was no further opportunity for photography.
